These lives are linked by imaginative leaps and made tantalising by the gaps that remain between them, the stories but untold. In the penultimate story, Bix’s son, Gregory, a author, has a Joycean imaginative and prescient in a snowstorm, ‘a galaxy of human lives hurtling in direction of his curiosity’ that don’t need know-how to be understood.
